Patti Zlaket – Clock Keeps Tickin’ (2025)
After stepping away from the recording studio for a while, veteran singer-songwriter and law school graduate Patti Zlaket returns to the music world specifically to re-release deluxe-edition reissues of her catalogue; then again, she’s not one to live in the past but look toward the future with an upcoming album. Today, we take a look and a listen to the first single from the forthcoming record, Dance Again. Join us as we delve headfirst into ‘Clock Keeps Tickin’’.
Truthfully, I wasn’t certain who Patti Zlaket was before delving into this review. Turning heads since the mid-1990s with albums like The Promise and Bliss, I fear I am a little late to the Zlaket party; better late than never, particularly in this instance. Returning to the streaming world after an almost two-decade break, ‘Clock Keeps Tickin’’ focuses on a renewed sound for the US-based musician, capturing the hearts of old fans, as well as gathering a new fanbase as a blast from the past and a new, emerging artist… well, sort of.
As with previous works, Zlacket retains the brush of velvety, heart-warming soul in ‘Clock Keeps Tickin’; yet, a breath of soft-rock seems to flutter in the melody with slight folk-pop leanings dancing across the tune. Produced by Tariqh Akoni, the new track is a sophisticated concoction of bold drums, soaring guitar, and an interspersed piano, adding a particular smile and twinkle to ‘Clock Keeps Tickin’’. Toe-tapping and mellifluous, the rhythmic groove and laidback tone showcase Akoni’s skill as a producer. The thing is, within this maturity of arrangement and Zlaket’s strong vocals, there is also a smile-inducing innocence wistfully travelling along the charming tune.
So, my opinion of Patti Zlaket and ‘Clock Keeps Tickin’’? A song to stick in my head for hours to come, and I’m certain I’ll be humming while singing “clock keeps ticking” over the next couple of days. I cannot wait for more from Zlaket and am eagerly heading back into her catalogue for more soulful tunes.
