Scott Clay – The Compass And The Wheel (2026)

When not plucking the guitar and creating music, singer-songwriter Scott Clay enjoys travelling and exploring the natural beauty of our world; then, he goes back and documents every soul-stirring moment in Americana-infused melodies. Hailing from the USA, Nashville-based Clay has the charm of a country singer, the soul of a blues player, and the gritty attitude of a rocker – all rolled into the smiles and celebration of life. This is our introduction to Scott Clay, so join us as we jump into his new single, ‘The Compass And The Wheel’.

Recorded and produced by Clay at Farmland Studios in Nashville, ‘The Compass And The Wheel’ joins the musical talents of session musicians Guthrie Trapp (guitar), Steve Mackey (bass), and Greg Morrow (drums). Rhythmically entwining their instruments, you can truly hear the skill and camaraderie of each artist. From the steady drumming acting like a heartbeat, the comforting bass, charging guitars, and Clay’s rich vocals, the group envelopes you in a powerful, endearing, and calming hug.

I find this harmonic sweep of Americana hits with the quintessential Nashville vibe; however, ‘The Compass And The Wheel’ inserts a haunting iciness within the “sit around the fire and sing along” demeanour. Amidst the guitar, drums, bass, and Clay’s vocals is a chilling string section with a dash of fragile female backing vocals. The point between cold and hot, dark and bright, hopeful and a sense of tragedy, ‘The Compass And The Wheel’ is, to say the least, emotional. Based on a tale of resilience, resistance, love and strength, Scott Clay explains:

“It was written about a book called In The Kingdom of Ice, by Hampton Sides, which is a non-fictional historical book. The premise is the USS Jeanette, captained by George DeLong, and they were trying to find a North Pole passage from San Francisco to Europe. The boat was trapped in the ice for nearly two years, and he wrote letters to his wife, Emma, in Brooklyn during his time fighting to survive in the Arctic conditions.”
