Side 4 Collective – You and Me (Against The World) (2025)

Should you be a fan of Beck, The Flaming Lips or Talking Heads, the chances are you’ll quite take a fancy to Side 4 Collective. The brainchild of Irish drummer Dave Hingerty, this project draws together an eclectic range of international artists to create music that inspires, intrigues and makes you sit back not only to enjoy but also to contemplate. Today, we take a look and listen to the most recent addition to his discography, ‘You and Me (Against The World)’.

Following the well-received ‘Me & Vincent’, Side 4 Collective continues to celebrate and embrace life with all its juts, jolts and ragged edgings. ‘Me & Vincent’ elevated the vibrancy of the communities of Dublin, paying homage to “…how Dublin Youth bring a sense of adventure and colour to our city.” ‘You and Me (Against The World)’, however, adds a sense of poignancy to the vibrant mixture, delicately unpicking the complexities of mental health, relationships and suicide. Side 4 Collective explains:

“The inspiration for the writing of this song was the letter Vicky Cornell had written to Variety Magazine, in part to eulogise her beloved, departed Chris. It became very important for us to approach this story with the sensitivity and tenderness, but also the unforgiving brutality and loss of a lost life. This is the story of a loved one drowning under the weight of mental health and addiction, of being so close and so within reach, but just beyond rescue. The song is seeking a way to deal with the complicated feelings of losing someone to suicide. It acknowledges the confusion that the ones who are left behind feel, while trying to understand and respect their loved one’s choices.”

Produced by Colm Quearney and Dave Hingerty, with mastering by Ruadhri Cushion, ‘You and Me (Against The World)’ weaves Quearney’s bass and guitars with Hingerty’s drums and percussion, creating a heart-warming sonic tapestry. Simplistic in a way, but also entirely kaleidoscopic, the track captures the core of life’s complexities but seems to iron things out in a rush of alternative rock. The interplay between Carol Keogh’s and Colm Querney’s vocals is of particular interest as each grabs opposite sides of a conversation, bringing enlightenment to the delicate issue of suicide.
