Proklaim – STARFALL (2024)

Weaving powerful messages through bold sonic tapestries, singer-songwriter Proklaim brings depth and profoundness to toe-tapping hip hop. I was introduced to the Namibia-based artist at the end of 2023 and continue to watch his progression with great interest. Dipping and diving across the blogosphere with critical acclaim from notable publications, various playlists and regular airplay on international radio stations, Proklaim is a name to remember. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘STARFALL’.

Despite being only two months into the new year (in fact, we are only one-and-a-half months in), ‘STARFALL’ is Proklaim’s sixth single of 2024. Hardly giving people time to breathe between the releases, one might consider the constant bombardment of music to be suffocating, but not in this case. The more music from Proklaim, the better he seems to become – like a bowl of macaroni and cheese that becomes tastier as time passes.

Inspired by the nostalgic sounds of 90s RnB and rap, Proklaim gathers the heart of Lauryn Hill sandwiched between the brash tones of Tupac and Jay Z. Interestingly, each of Proklaim’s singles presents a unique style highlighting his innovative nature. In ‘CIVIL’, there was a stronger, harder rap intonation; however, ‘Vamos’ inserts a lilt of roots rap behind a contemporary hip-hop sound. Following ‘RIGHTEOUS’, a mellow rap track with smooth vocals, ‘STARFALL’ is another insight into the mellifluous synchronicity of hard-hitting hip hop and moving RnB.

Recorded at Pen Pushaz Studio, ‘STARFALL’ is filled with bold beats and smooth synths; however, it is the vocals that truly ensnare a listener’s senses. Standing out amidst the simplistic electronic backing, Proklaim holds your hand as his rich voice navigates a kaleidoscopic sea of sound leading you to a bright light at the end of the tunnel. As I mentioned, the mellifluous harmony of instruments and vocals highlights symphonic synchronicity within the arrangement. Yet, just as there is harmony, there is a slight brashness within pulling you to attention with its cool rap charm.

So, what is my overall opinion of ‘STARFALL’? Proklaim once again captures the core of carpe diem in the new single. A song about resilience and prevailing, even though working toward the reward can be tiresome, ‘STARFALL’ is the theme song to the strength of the human spirit. My one complaint is that even at four-and-a-half minutes long, the song is still too short.
