Space Memory Effect – Blue (2025)
Blending elements of alternative pop and rock, singer-songwriter Amy Susan Wallace -performing as Space Memory Effect – records music that is sentimental, transformative, and wrapped in raw emotion. While US-based Wallace has been writing and recording material for several years, she began releasing her songs a couple of years ago with 2023’s ‘Love Doesn’t Care’ – or, at least, that’s what her online streaming shows. Shifting from her 2024 “Lullaby Fortune Sweet Dreams” series to the “From Here, I Dream” era, Wallace invites listeners to “…explore memory, transformation, and the in-between.” Join us as we delve into her new single, ‘Blue’.
A double-dose of firsts, ‘Blue’ is not only Wallace’s first release of 2025, but takes us back to the initial conception of Space Memory Effect in 2019, when musician Trevor Lewington began a collaboration with Wallace. Lewington, known for his work with Enter The Haggis and The Wilderness Club, has produced and co-penned the majority of Space Memory Effect’s work; however, ‘Blue’ is a drag-back to the very beginning. Moreover, it embraces the joy of remote collaboration with Lewington in Ontario, Wallace in Seattle, and contributing drummer, Tom Baracco, living in Connecticut.
The track retains the alternative pop-inspired tone we hear in Space Memory Effect’s singles – proof that the signature sound was there in the beginning, even if it wasn’t obvious at the time. Yet, while Wallace’s folksy vocals whisper within the melody, ‘Blue’ engulfs the tune with Lewington’s soaring guitar, bass and backing vocals. Add Baracco’s anchoring drums and Wallace’s twinkling keys, and you have something lingering in the realm of alternative rock but without the heaviness of a harder-hitting alt-rock sound.
“The original spark for ‘Blue’ came from a situation at work that left me feeling dismissed and frustrated. Someone made me mad, and it bummed me out. Writing the chorus helped me process that moment. It wasn’t planned – I just sat down, and it came out. The song evolved over time, but that initial feeling is still in there. ‘Blue’ stands out because it was the first song Trevor and I worked on together...“ – Amy Susan Wallace on ‘Blue’
