Sugar Scars – Dark Charm (2025)

Describing their music as “…songs [that] depict an ideal situation on the dance floor with someone that fascinates you, and results in two becoming one… in a moment of bliss.” – perfectly apt considering the bi-national core of Sugar Scars, proving music transcends distance, space, culture, and diversity. Combining the talents of multi-instrumental DJs from the USA and Mexico, each member brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and cool musical vibes to something appealing to an international audience. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Dark Charm’.

Following the well-received 2024 EP, The Rhythmic Body Reflexes, Sugar Scars saunter, or rather swagger, into 2025 with ‘Dark Charm’. A truly immersive single, listening to ‘Dark Charm’ is like being tossed into a psychedelic sonic bubble where you float in a sense of confusion, wonder, and desire to discover more despite a senses-ensnaring overwhelming rush of sound. Lingering somewhere between the psychedelic darkness of post-punk and a weighty grunge, but flushed with alternative rock leanings, it’s nearly impossible to define ‘Dark Charm’. What I do know is that it’s memorable, standing out, demanding attention.

A synth-driven tune, you find yourself carried along its shimmering breeze; however, while there is a sense of serenity in the kaleidoscopic waves, ‘Dark Charm’ offers vulnerability, eeriness, and a sense of haunting from its simultaneously subdued and confident melody. The vocals linger in a somewhat gothic illusion, so what might have been an anchor in the melee are imps peeping from the background, sending chills down your spine with mischievous glances.

Alright, so what is my overall opinion of Sugar Scars and ‘Dark Charm’? Certainly different, and an undeniably intriguing kick to my Monday morning, leaving me uncomfortable but simultaneously content with its swirl of off-kilter obscurity. Taken from their upcoming album, Dark Spark White Light, I am eager to hear more from Sugar Scars. Until then, I’ll have to enjoy their back catalogue as I wait with bated breath.
