Tash Hills – Dancing Tonight (2023)

Oozing passion, power and funktastic flair, singer-songwriter Tash Hills empowers people to believe in love, life and themselves with her music. When we last spoke about Hills it was all about her single ‘Diamond Life’. She touched on issues of self-discovery, acceptance and self-confidence pushing us to believe in ourselves and “know you are enough and beautiful inside and out.” Today, she combines her zest for life and belief in love with her new single ‘Dancing Tonight’.

Hot on the heels of her well-received single ‘Burnin’ Love’, a collaboration with UK producer Andrew Napoleon, Hills hits us with ‘Dancing Tonight’. Previous collaborations included jazz artist James Berkeley and producer George Holliday; however, Hills combines her musical prowess with US producer Ryan Prewett in the new single. Hailing from the Nashville country scene, Prewett is currently the keyboardist for renowned singer Billy Ray Cyrus (yep, Miley’s dad). His production, however, is not all country. Combining classic sounds with modern production, he brings us sophisticated elegance in his melodies. Merge that with Tash Hills and we have something special going on.

Inspired by Chaka Khan, Quincy Jones and George Benson, Tash Hills combines vintage jazz and funk with flits of neo-soul in ‘Dancing Tonight’. As in ‘Burnin’ Love’, the bold Chaka Khan flavour emerges with her rich vocals. Traipsing from powerhouse execution to a warm loving and all-embracing softness, Hills has the skill of knocking your socks off in the verses to comforting listeners in the infectious choruses.

Belying Hills’ Khan-like voice, the melody is as ferocious but without any raw, aggressive ferocity. Taking us back to the 1970s with a strong funk vibe, the pounding drums match a dynamic guitar with harmonic ease. When I pressed play, I immediately felt bebop jazz flowing from the guitar and this lilt continues to flicker in the flame of the melody. For me, however, it is the horns that bring true flavour to ‘Dancing Tonight’. Keeping up with Hills’ powerhouse vocals, interspersed saxophones enhance the “oh man, this is awesome” attitude of the song.

Hills explains that ‘Dancing Tonight’ is “about the love shared between two people who truly cherish each other”. Groovy, infectious and filled with a strange sensuality in a vibrant melody, ‘Dancing Tonight’ is a representation of pure, raw and honest love.
