The Theos Variant – Beacons (2025)

If Tool and Breaking Benjamin were to have a younger sibling, the chances are The Theos Variant would be that kid. With a penchant for creating engaging melodies bound with bands of hard rock and metal, the US-based duo pack a punch that can be felt far beyond their North American borders. Transcending the boundaries of live performances, audiences can enjoy the raw power of their gigs through their headphones or bouncing off the walls from their speakers. The latest addition to the band’s discography is the single ‘Beacons’.

Following the well-received 2024 single ‘Mechanical Organism’, The Theos Variant saunter into 2025 with ‘Beacons’. Produced at Outback Recordings by Benedikt Hain and Thomas Krottenthaler, ‘Beacons’ keep the hard rock rush of ‘Mechanical Organisms’, weaving their weighty brand of rock into a metal tapestry; however, a slip of grunge kicks in slivering across the melody with silvery tones.

Showcasing another side to their multi-faceted personality, ‘Beacons’ is one part metal, one part grunge, and all an alternative immersion into the darkness of hard rock music. A truly immersive track, multi-instrumentalist Geoff Haught sends you across a foggy sonic river with thunderous drums and soaring guitars washing tumultuous waves your way. Yet, while the imagery might be scary and a little breathtaking, Dan Lentz keeps things from being too overwhelming. In his rich but gruff vocals, there is a certain degree of eeriness, but you can also feel the warm embrace as he holds your hand to navigate the pending storm.

Melodically, ‘Beacons’ is one hell of a ride as its chilling tune creeps beneath your skin, but it is the lyricism and theme that make it more profound. A song of confusion and turmoil with the flutter of hope, Dan Lentz explains: “It’s about holding the light for others – especially when no one held it for you. We wanted something that hits hard but also carries hope.”
