The Trusted – Levitate (2025)
With ‘Yellowhammer’, The Trusted dove into the emotional disconnect between reality and the online world. With ‘The Lightning’, the lads empowered listeners as they explored the power of ego, self-worth and inner greatness. From the tragic to the triumphant, The Trusted take life by the scruff and capture each moment with melodic charm. Yet, while there is a signature note to The Trusted, they continue to wander in a genre-diverse soundscape. Powerful, confident performances melded with hard-hitting songs, the UK-based foursome is no longer rising as a formidable band; they are a formidable band.
On the back of their well-received single ‘Yellowhammer’, The Trusted shift from a harder, heavier rush of alternative rock to a twirl of old-school indie-rock in ‘Levitate’. Produced with Rees Broomfield, ‘Levitate’ is from the outset a toe-tapping concoction of David Batchelor’s crashing drums, Dale Holt-Mead’s scorching guitar, rhythmic bass courtesy of Fin Cunningham, while Tom Cunningham weaves across the melody with his rich, honey-soaked vocals. Showcasing his sophistication with a production wand, Broomfield’s elegance and maturity exist in ‘Levitate’, enhancing its warmth, tenderness, and all-around upbeat, infectious flair.
At first listen, I have to admit that ‘Yellowhammer’ appeared more powerful and engaging than ‘Levitate’; however, just as ‘Yellowhammer’ pushed against the online world attempting for something “…real in all the noise”, ‘Levitate’ pivots with its own push, shove, and tap into our hearts and souls. A happier mix of indie-rock, The Trusted holds your hands, dances about, and has you laughing with absolute glee. Tom Cunningham explains:
“This tune is about someone throwing your head into the clouds and hoping it never comes down… a love song where everything is spinning out of control, when you lose track of who you are and where you’re going.”
I might sound like a broken record saying that The Trusted are a band to enjoy; I don’t care. From darker, angular despair to the euphoric giggle of losing yourself in a moment of joy, I can always trust The Trusted to bring something fascinating, intriguing, and fantastic to my ears. Take a listen, you won’t regret it.
