The Yacht Club – The Greatest Misadventure (Anniversary Edition) (2026)

Almost a decade ago, seven years to be exact, The Yacht Club fell onto our virtual desks and wriggled into our ears with their 2019 album, The Last Words That You Said To Me Kept Me Here And Safe. In the same year, we introduced The Yacht Club as our January Musician of the Month. Skip ahead several more singles, a bit of a hiatus during the Covid years, a line-up change, and a well-received EP, I Don’t Think That I Am Ready To Be Without You, and the UK-based foursome reach our ears again with their track, ‘The Greatest Misadventure (The Anniversary Edition)’.

Recorded and produced by long-time collaborator Tom Hill, with mastering by Dylan Barber, this anniversary release of one of their more beloved songs is a dip back to yesteryear, reimagining and reliving their earlier days. Now, while the current lineup includes Marcus Gooda (vocals and guitar), Tom Joy (bass and keyboard), Alexander Esp (drums) and Henry Fears (right guitar), ‘The Greatest Misadventure (Anniversary Edition)’ features original guitarist Hill plucking strings as right guitar.

Taking a listen to the 2015 original of ‘The Greatest Misadventure’, I find the anniversary edition is far more polished and sophisticated. It’s not as abrasive or raw as the group’s maturity and understanding of their instruments shines through. Moreover, the effortlessness of the arrangement showcases the camaraderie between the members and how performing has become instinctual.

Crashing in the background, Esp’s drums bring an urgency to the track while retaining some form of anchoring steadiness. The bass guitar marches along with a dynamic surety, and keyboards glide through slipping with a silvery tone. However, as much as each instrument has its individuality, it is the guitars that stand out. Almost weaving an intricate tapestry, there’s a type of interplay between the guitars – they seem to be talking to each other while also dancing together in harmony.

Sincere and introspective, with Gooda’s rich vocals holding your hand, ‘The Greatest Misadventure (Anniversary Edition)’ is a mature reinvention of the original that needs to be heard. Highly recommended!
