Torpey – Why Won’t The World Stop Turning? (2025)
“Keep calm and carry on” – it’s a saying I both love and loathe. Inspiring in a way to overcome the challenges and continue with an empowered, optimistic nature; to celebrate life in its happiness and make your bright light. Then again, I loathe it for its message of continuing despite the struggle, appearing happier and calm, but seething inside because you feel despair. Why the hell should you keep it in, even though everyone else is plodding along? This is the crux of Torpey’s new single, ‘Why Won’t The World Stop Turning?’… well, in a way. He shares:
“I wrote ‘Why Won’t The World Stop Turning?’ after my grandfather died, noticing how people were going about their day, oblivious to what I felt should be world-changing. It is a song about escapism and how life relentlessly carries on, no matter how much you feel as though you need a break.”
Following his critically acclaimed single ‘Only The Good Die Young’, Torpey shifts from a heavier alternative rock sound to a softer, soothing, more mellifluous blend of folk and indie-rock. Produced with Darragh Purcell, ‘Why Won’t The World Stop Turning?’ showcases the influence of Oasis, R.E.M. and the Beatles in Torpey’s music; however, a lingering swoop of vintage folk brings rawness to the polished rock-ness. In a twirling combination of guitars, bass, drums and percussion, Torpey uses a sheen of simplicity to captivate the most complex of emotions with sonic flair.
Opening with a basic, barebones guitar-driven starkness, the single is honest and innocent. It’s one thought, one person’s feeling standing tall with tragedy; however, as the song continues, each instrument brings another dimension sonically and thematically. Every brush of drums and hit of guitar represents the world swirling about in an almost chaotic mess of light, adding confusion and just letting you feel like a single puzzle piece in the overall picture.
Sincere, sentimental, reflective, and most importantly filled with brutal honesty, ‘Why Won’t The World Stop Turning?’ evokes raw emotion with its stand-out melody. I am eager to hear more from Torpey and highly recommend we all keep an eye on this shining star.
