Track of the Day: Cargo G – Chrome Heart (2025)

Residing in the realm between strength and softness, confidence and vulnerability, whispered secrets and bold determination, Cargo G uses sharp, honest, poetic lyricism woven with moving melodies to resonate, linger, and enchant listeners. The brainchild of Texas-based Gracie Lee, Cargo G may have only started releasing music this year – according to Spotify at least – but she is already turning heads far beyond her US borders. Join us as we delve into her most recent single, ‘Chrome Heart’.

Following her debut EP Pressure, Cargo G joins forces with producer John Allen Stephens in ‘Chrome Heart’, offering a rush of experimental R&B meets neo-soul. For me, there is a quiet reminiscence of Amy Winehouse in the attitude, sound, and heartfelt, skin-chilling swoop of whispers; a sound that is silent but simultaneously shouts in its vulnerability. Recorded at the renowned Third Coast Recording Company, ‘Chrome Heart’ is sophisticated and mature… then again, naïve fragility and honest innocence seem to linger in the track.

Simplistic and almost barebones with Cargo G’s acapella flair, ‘Chrome Heart’ has a sparse haunting both enhanced and subdued by the vocals. Yet, as with the constant duality of the song, its simplicity veils a kaleidoscopic sonic wave, hiding and waiting to break through. This tune is complex with intricate arrangements and composition; a distinctive dissection of the melody from the vocals lying atop a prominent piano before slowly fusing in a comfortable hush with strings binding the track. Oddly enough, as haunting as the first part is, Cargo G pulls you into a warm embrace as the song peters out.

Already an intricate unpicking of identity and self-discovery, ‘Chrome Heart’ is not to be defined lyrically or thematically. Cargo G shares that “although the song is strongly story-driven, the audience can relate and take whatever it means for them…” Sincere, sentimental and innovative, ‘Chrome Heart’ is the song to make you tear up while plastering a smile on your face. I am eager to hear more from this highly recommended artist.
