Track of the Day: Iris Blue – Ok, Finally (2023)

The indie-rock group Iris Blue was officially founded two years ago when Quinn Pokora (vocals and guitar) and Dave Catanese (drums), now friends and roommates, decided to make some music. The duo made some noise, and it became popular; they knew they needed help. Enter long-time friend Alec Montoya (bass). Skip ahead a few months and guitarist Hunter Hirsh joined the crew; thus, we have Iris Blue. In 2021 they released their debut single ‘Stage Lights’ and since then have received critical acclaim across the globe. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Ok, Finally’.

Following their 2022 EP, It’s Entertainment Now, and 2023 single ‘Outside Perspective’, Iris Blue finds a line between Two Door Cinema Club and Arctic Monkeys in ‘Ok, Finally’. The brash precision of Jack White’s guitar stylings is effortlessly adopted by Pokora and Hirsh; however, Iris Blue is rawer with a slithering mellifluous flow woven into those scorching guitar lines. Montoya’s bass keeps a steady beat along with Catanese’s drums. Yet, the pounding and crashes of the arrangement offer a chaotic indie-rock effect snuggled within a harmonic exterior.

Produced by Seth Henderson at Always Be Genius Studios, ‘Ok, Finally’ is a song with sophisticated elegance. The thing is, just as I mentioned the rawness of the guitars, its sophistication is tinged with innocent, almost painfully naïve vulnerability. Confident and forceful but with a whimsical lingering of fragility, there is an obscure allure to ‘Ok, Finally’.

The melody in itself has people captivated but Pokora’s off-filter vocals up the obscurity ante. Gruff and brash with a rough ruggedness, it offers a potential lilt toward desperate intimacy. Yet, the song is actually lifting the veil of despair and anxiety clouded by a happier theme – new perspectives and romance. Iris Blue explain that the single is about feeling lost, being attracted to someone because it feels safe, then meeting someone who brings a new perspective to your life. ‘Ok, Finally’ is that breath of moving from the familiar to something refreshingly new.
