Track of the Day: Johnluke – Green Eyes (2025)
Quickly climbing the ladder as one of Ireland’s most exciting emerging artists, Johnluke has spent the past year and a bit turning heads, building a following, and showcasing his natural storytelling skills bound in confident melodies. We were only introduced to Johnluke earlier this year with ‘City Lovin’, but his name was already on the lips of people across his native Ireland with Bay FM making him a finalist for 2024’s Irish Music Month to Johnluke performing at iconic festivals and venues with the likes of LYRA, Jamie McIntyre, and Mark O’ Donnell. Today, we take a look and listen to his most recent single, ‘Green Eyes’.
Following the well-received single ‘City Lovin’, Johnluke brings audiences a heart-warming rush of folk music mixed with indie-rock sensibilities in ‘Green Eyes’. Produced by whenthebeatisbad, the single is a concoction of dynamic drums and powerful guitars with a sheen of keys bringing warm vibes from behind the bold rock foundation. In other words, Johnluke presents with raw indie-rock, but just behind it, the sea of folk nuance inserts a kaleidoscopic ambience, giving a sense of soothing to ‘Green Eyes’.
I am not saying that Johnluke’s ‘Green Eyes’ is not a soothing song. In fact, the richness of his vocals enhances the melody’s sincere tranquillity and laidback quality. Yet, while ‘Green Eyes’ is a charming, elegant breath of calming music, the lyricism adds a weighty bittersweetness to the track. Penned with Jessica Richardson, the lyrics explore the complexities of love and romance, delicately unpicking the intricacies of human emotion in relationships. Johnluke explains:
“It’s about when you’re so in love with someone, you try your hardest to ignore all the negatives, but you just can’t help but see them. Deep down, you just want to stay blinded by the love.”
Honest, sentimental and introspective, Johnluke delves into the grey area of love between the honeymoon phase and stark reality in ‘Green Eyes’. Quickly becoming a favourite at The Other Side Reviews, he is becoming more memorable with each single we hear. I cannot wait for more from this talented individual.
