Single reviewsThe Other Side Reviewstrack of the day

Track of the Day: Katherine Christie Evans – Lucente Stella (Shining Star) (2025)

Even before hitting the play button on her Spotify, the description of singer-songwriter Katherine Christie Evans already sparked great interest and eagerness – an artist “drawing on eclectic influences from medieval and Renaissance Music to IDM and grunge/alternative rock.” Then, I hit the play button, and that interest was shifted to the side as she took my ears, heart and soul to another dimension where emotions, thoughts, and communication are lost; only raw music remains. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘Lucente Stella (Shining Star)’.

Originally released on her debut album, Hert so Hy: Songs of Longing from Medieval Europe, this ‘Lucente Stella (Shining Star)’ is a re-imagined version of that first love song. Twirled and twisted, tossed up and down, and landing with a soul-stirring chill, the 2025 ‘Lucente Stella (Shining Star)’ is on another level. Following her single, ‘Adiu, Adiu, Dous Dame Jolie’, the self-recorded, composed and produced single shifts from a folk-inspired tone to a heavier, weightier rush of art-rock with cinematic, avant-garde sentimentalities.

Proving herself a musical alchemist, Evans opens ‘Lucente Stella’ with a simplistic hum of guitars, which delicately wafts into a meeting of bold acoustic drums and powerful electronic beats. As the song progresses, an oscillation between simplicity and full-bodied complexity exists – first with the guitar, then with a shimmer of electronica.

For me, listening to ‘Lucente Stella’ is an immersive experience, being thrust into a hazy forest with fairy-like twinkles fluttering across the sparse landscape. Dark and eerie, you find yourself quickly gripping at a hope of merely staying on course; a desperate yearning to discover the correct path. Evans enters with her haunting soprano, which simultaneously acts as a siren’s call, but oddly, guides you along the vivid medieval realm.

So, my overall opinion of Katherine Christie Evans and ‘Lucente Stella (Shining Star)’? In short, Evans can wriggle into your ear, rattle about your brain, then send shivers down your spine while grabbing at your heart and leaving you utterly breathless. All in all, this is an artist never to be forgotten.
