Track of the Day: Little Known – Headwreck (2025)
With their 2023 debut album, As It Is, Little Known cemented their name within their Irish music scene. Yet, their music has been wandering into people’s ears since the debut single ‘Pretty Song’, and I’m rather disappointed to say it is only now I am discovering Little Known. No, not disappointed in their music, rather disappointed that I’m so late to the party. Drawing together the talents of Liam Daly (vocals and guitar), Finn Walsh (bass and synth), and Liam Berry (drums), the Cork-based trio offers a “sonic experience that is both powerful and immersive…” The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Headwreck’.
Sauntering into 2025 alongside the single ‘Let Me Be Myself’, ‘Headwreck’ appears to be a bit of a pivotal turn in Little Known’s musical journey. Unlike the 2023 single ‘Don’t Worry’ or even ‘Let Me Be Myself’, the lads lean further toward a heavier alternative rock tone in ‘Headwreck’, shifting from an old-school post-punk or indie-rock sound. Dragging me back to the 90s grunge and alt-rock sounds, hearing the new track is like jumping into a swirl of… well, I might say Three Days Grace; then again, that nostalgic thought just doesn’t seem correct. Little Known has the feel of retro rock, but the heaviness of their music is rather new and incomparable.
Bound in a sophisticated bubble of elegant arrangement, the production of ‘Headwreck’ demonstrates maturity and skill when it comes to production. Wrapped in a silvery sonic concoction, crashing drums match a dynamic guitar, while a bold bass chases shimmering synths. Interestingly, while the track has that sophistication, raw intensity and naivety filter through with rough, intimate grittiness.
Bringing a sense of clarity to a murky alt-rock undergrowth, ‘Headwreck’ is rich and bold but still eerie and tragic. If this song is anything to go by, I can see why Little Known is one of the more intriguing bands in Ireland. I am eager to hear more from the highly recommended trio.
