Track of the Day: Maria Deirisarri – Parabellum (2025)
With fresh-faced innocence beaming from her beautiful, dark eyes, heart-warming smile, and general aura of hope and sweetness, Maria Deirisarri can charm her way into your heart, but there’s far more lying beneath this bright, youthful spark of a girl. Entering the music industry at age 13, her music wandered through various slicks of pop. A soulful voice met eclectic arrangements in moving melodies. Skip ahead a few years, and the US-based singer-songwriter continues her musical journey daubing her sonic palette with colours of folk, indie and even bossa nova.
Following her well-received single ‘Letting It Go’, Deirisarri releases her new single, ‘Parabellum’. Produced with Corey Kilgannon at Beaches Vineyard and Jacob Hudson at Pine Studios, ‘Parabellum’ continues the folk-inspired sound of ‘Letting It Go’, but somehow, appears darker, deeper, and more intense than its predecessor despite its minimalistic soundscape… or perhaps it’s the barebones tone that gives it the soul-stirring depth.
Penned the night before and tracked live in a single take, ‘Parabellum’ is, as Deirisarri explains: “there are some songs that come to you out of nowhere, when in reality, you’ve been working towards writing them your entire life. ‘Parabellum’ is one of those songs for me.”
Brimming with raw, brutal honesty and sincerity, Deirisarri unpicks the complexities of love and life with an intricate acoustic arrangement. While Deirisarri’s vocals bring a sense of delicate vulnerability to the cinematic single, it merely peeks behind the bold message of self-empowerment, self-worth, and the need to stand up with the “well, you thought you left a mess behind, but that’s just not true”. Filled with percussion, strings, a guitar, and a piano, there is a soothing tranquillity in the sparse melody; then again, as with the vocals, the arrangement kicks with ferocity in its subdued way.
The final track from her upcoming EP, Si Vis Pacem, ‘Parabellum’ is a song that demands attention but brings the punch in a simple sonic package. I cannot wait to hear more from this intriguing alternative folk musician.
