Ula – In My Eyes (2025)
Inspired by the likes of Allie X, Aurora and St. Vincent, singer-songwriter, producer and session musician Ula fuses “… avant-garde flair with melodic pop and eerie undertones”. We came across UK-based Ula a couple of months ago with her debut single, ‘So Kind’, and while we were among the masses who were only just discovering Ula, she has turned heads internationally beyond her solo project. Known for her confident performances, moving melodies and powerful presence, she is the frontwoman of prog-pop group Tenacity; however, we step into a more intimate part of her personality with her solo work. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘In My Eyes’.
Following her well-received single ‘So Kind’, Ula retains the off-kilter element of her unique sound with ‘In My Eyes’. Yet, unlike ‘So Kind’, this sophomore single takes a step down with a more mellifluous tone in the pop-inspired song. Finding duality in its arrangement, ‘In My Eyes’ offers both simplicity and complexity with its ballad-type style. Sincere and sentimental, Ula’s haunting vocals dance across a synth-laden melody. It’s like seeing a twinkling sonic waterfall with fairies dipping into the pool, leaving a sparkling shimmer behind with the fairy dust.
Produced by Ula, ‘In My Eyes’ is light, fun, languid and tranquil, but within its sincerity lies an almost eerie brush of vulnerability and fragility. Not off-kilter or peculiar like ‘So Kind’, this track allows you to breathe deeply in the relaxing air; then again, a hint of Ula-esque obscurity keeps you on your toes within the cascade of warm music. As the song progresses, you might begin to settle into a comfortable pose, but the brash ending with synths hurriedly building a sonic whirlpool hints that something deeper, crazier, and kind of strange is about to happen.
Taken from her upcoming self-produced EP, set for release later this year, I believe Ula has shown us but a teeny part of what will become the Ula sound. I worried that the debut single would be Ula’s peak, but after listening to ‘In My Eyes’, I am certain there is a lot more to come.
