Ula – So Kind (2025)
You may know Ula as the leader of the prog-pop project Tenacity, but today you’ll see a more intimate side of the talented musician. Venturing on a solo project, the UK-based Ula brings a refreshing flair of avant-garde sentiments amidst a harmonic waltz through various shades of pop. Originally hailing from Poland, Ula made her way across the pond at the age of 17 to study at The BRIT School. Skip ahead a little bit, and she has established herself as an accomplished musician, producer and sound engineer; however, it is her original project we are looking at (and listening to). Join us as we delve into her debut single, ‘So Kind’.
Self-composed, recorded and produced, ‘So Kind’ is, well, it’s really just a warped wrap of pop flickering with synth-heavy floods of sound. Yet, while ‘So Kind’ is primarily an electronic-driven tune, Ula finds a line with organic elements, including underlying percussion and piano interspersed throughout the song.
Soothing and smooth, listening to ‘So Kind’ is like floating along a brightly coloured sonic river. The thing is, just as you feel the joy and bubble-gum happiness of contemporary pop tones, there is a tumultuousness to the rollercoaster ride of pop-induced sounds and emotions. Bold beats roll the ups, while a shimmer of synths dips to the lows – and don’t forget that twinkling piano like splash of cool water.
Melodically, the obscurity of the instrumentation is enough to blur that line between typical mainstream pop and off-kilter individuality. Add the rich whisper of Ula’s vocals, and it’s as if you’re travelling off on a journey with an old friend navigating the waves.
So, what is my overall opinion of Ula and ‘So Kind’? ‘So Kind’ is one of those singles that can be enjoyed on its own, but will also filter into the background music as one of many songs. Memorable? Not particularly. Interesting? Definitely.
In addition to the single, Ula released an official music video for ‘So Kind’. You can view the video below and/or on her YouTube channel.
