Untold River – Sleeping City Cowboy (2022)

The brainchild of singer-songwriter Ciaran Egan, Untold River is both a labour of love and a fresh, innocent coming-of-age for this talented artist. Having spent the majority of his time in previous bands as a guitarist preferring to step away from the microphone, UK-based Egan left the singing up to others. When the “pandemic years” came, Egan found himself isolated at home, saving time on commutes and listening to plenty of music. As such, his desire to write songs overcame him, as did his interest in stepping up to sing original material. Come with us as we take a glance at his debut single ‘Sleeping City Cowboy’.

With several years of experience in bands, Untold River is a leap from working with others to sitting up as a solo artist. As with the conception of his solo musical journey, ‘Sleeping City Cowboy’ was borne of the Covid-19 lockdowns. Technically, the song was conceived in 2016, but it was not completed until Egan looked at it a few years later with fresh eyes. Now, we have an indie-folk single that can connect with individuals who have gone through lockdowns – so, pretty much all of us.

Raised in an Irish family, Ciaran Egan is greatly influenced by the folk genre, and this is evident in ‘Sleeping City Cowboy’. What I love about this track is not the soothing combination of drums, guitars and Egan’s rich vocals; rather, how the electronic instrumentation harmoniously melds with organic elements finding the delicate balance between the two. Full-bodied, warm and tender vocals add an intense intimacy to ‘Sleeping City Cowboy’, along with a sense of intricate fragility with the Egan’s desperate tone.

Sincere, sentimental and sensitive, Untold River presents a sophisticated innocence in the soul-stirring debut single ‘Sleeping City Cowboy’.
