Von Venn – Only In The Night (2025)
The brainchild of singer-songwriter Gary Cox, Von Venn draws together the natural talents of Cox (vocals, guitars, bass and synth), Terry Doyle (keyboards, synths and vocals), Ciara Henry (vocals), and Mark Wogan (drums). Known for their diverse sound, Von Venn saunters through different fields of music, picking a sonic bouquet of indie-rock, alternative rock, indie-pop and folk with some sprigs of new-wave delicately peeking through the nest of flowers. While Von Venn began sharing their music in 2022, it is only now that we are introduced to the Ireland-based musicians. Join us as we delve into their latest single, ‘Only In The Night’.
Following their well-received single ‘You Can Talk To Me’, ‘Only In The Night’ steps toward old-school soft rock meets indie-rock stylings. While the track is not simplistic or minimalistic in its arrangement, a sparseness seemingly exists between the soaring guitars, bold bass, steady drums, and shimmering keyboards. It is as if you are heading along a journey through a sonic forest, but despite the kaleidoscopic wind brushing your hair, you find a safe path to follow.
For me, the navigating feature is the rich vocals speaking to you directly and holding out his hand, acting as an anchor and as an old friend in the curious environment. Yet, there is a sense of vulnerability whispering in the honey-drenched words, delicately unpicking the painful, sad realisations of ending romances. Cox explains:
“Sometimes in life, a relationship has to end… someone decides that their needs don’t match their partner’s needs. Someone has to make a decision to leave. There’s no animosity, no big falling out… just a sad realisation that the end has come and separate paths now must be walked. Better to let go than to be half-hearted about the future. Still… on some dark nights you wonder what might have been… if you had the courage to stay.”
