Strangely Alright – Maybe If (2020)

Every day, the world seems to be moving faster and faster not giving us the time we need to slow down and let information sink in. Strangely Alright is here to offer the longer sessions you need to centre yourself and see more clearly with ‘Maybe If’. The single is a continuation of their vision of atmospheric extended compositions that explore philosophical lyrics and experimental melodies.

These extended melodies are courtesy of Regan Lane (vocals, keys), Sean Van Dommelen (guitar, vocals), Ken Schaff (bass), Raymond Hayden (keys, vocals) and Jason Blair (drums). Through their sonic experimentation, they invite you to turn off your mind and let it drift where it wants to go.

‘Maybe If’ draws you in with a progressive opening full of wavering tones that shimmer into a guitar and piano line. The melody has a light build-up with zinging tones flying past you in the background. The melody makes it easy to relax into it and let your mind go. There is something about it that makes you think about lying in an open field and just relaxing in the sun. The easiness of the instrumentation gets you to slow down and really start to appreciate the different tones on offer. The psychedelic synths combine so well with the soaring guitar lines and a beat that keeps you on an even keel.

The psychedelic vibes are enhanced by the vocals that float above the melody. The harmonisations add to the hazy feeling of the vocals. There is also something very 60s and 70s about the vocal performance that takes your brain in a different direction. The vocals inspire a whimsical feeling in you as they flit over your senses.

Strangely Alright wants you to take the time to slow down and relax with their single ‘Maybe If’. This extended single is just under 8 minutes long but doesn’t feel that way. The melody and vocals draw you into a hazy relaxation that allows the music to seep into you.
