Dorothy Ella – Do You Still Lie (Probably) (2025)

If Jamiroquai and Sophie Ellis-Bextor were to have a kid, the chances are Dorothy Ella would be that sassy little ray of sunshine. With a cheeky wink and massive grin, she can light up a room by simply being there; however, Ella is far more than a pretty face. Beneath the charms lies an old soul bringing raw emotion to listeners with her music. Channelling the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin, she oozes that empowering attitude, but blended into a softer, more soothing indie-pop tone. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘Do You Still Lie (Probably)’.

Following her 2024 singles ‘Thunder’ and ‘Talk’, ‘Do You Still Lie (Probably)’ is a bright, bouncy tune with that head-bopping quality that defines the song you blast at full volume when heading off on a road trip. Produced by Anthony Webb, the pounding drums, soaring guitars, and a bold bass twirl about in a silvery concoction capturing the lightness of indie-pop… but slices of classic rock slip through with hard-hitting guitar riffs.

If you’ve ever watched Sandi Thom’s video for ‘I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker’, you can appreciate the celebration of life she offers as she walks toward the camera, albeit with a tinge of societal discontent. For me, Dorothy Ella is exactly the same, but without the discontent. A massive smile, an infectious song, and a strong feeling of connection with the artist. Truth be told, I wouldn’t mind a teaming up of Sandi Thom and Dorothy Ella – it’d certainly be something to behold.

‘Do You Still Lie (Probably)’ is a song where you sing along even though you don’t know the words, and within the warp of rich, soulful music, there lies a celebratory anthem. Empowering, enlightening, and emotional, the track embraces the complexities of relationships but tackles the strength and resilience of leaving that toxicity behind. Ella explains:

“This is a breakup anthem about feeling free now you’re out of a relationship that wasn’t right for you. For a long time, I was worried about expressing myself, but this song has given me so much freedom to write, perform, and now release.”
