Asta Bria – Dragonfly (2025)
Gentle yet strong, bold yet subdued, wistful yet commanding – this is how I would describe singer-songwriter Asta Bria. Based in the UK, London to be exact, Bria delicately sprinkles washes of pop across intricate melodies. Her 2024 single ‘Dream no6’ saw Bria “…scoop up the listener onto a rare rousing journey of pleasure…”, and her successive tracks, ‘Emma’ and ‘Our Bible’, showcased a multi-faceted persona delving into styles of folk music. Today, we take a listen to her most recent single, ‘Dragonfly’.
As with her single, ‘Emma’, ‘Dragonfly’ sees Bria pour herself into the melody with passionate zeal. Produced with Rob Davis and mixed by Carl Ward, this collaboration blends the electronic flair of Davis (known for Kylie Minogue’s hit ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’) with the softness of Asta Bria’s folk-tinged tones. Yet, in its powerful, ready-for-the-dancefloor with thousands of hands pumping in the air attitude, there is a distinctive fragility lingering in the delicate vocals. Moreover, the song highlights the skill of Davis and Ward, but vulnerability clings to the sonic wrapper.
For me, ‘Dragonfly’ is perfectly titled using the imagery of a dragonfly flying above a sonic river, quickly dipping and darting. In this case, the river is a swirl of multi-coloured electronic beats and shimmering synths. In this case, Asta Bria is the dragonfly sipping at moments; however, there is a flip side to the dragonfly image. Instead of merely collecting a drop of water here and there, the dragonfly looks into the synth-driven pool to see a young girl dancing about within the crystalline waves.
A burst of fun and happiness streaming from your speakers, ‘Dragonfly’ is the perfect pick-me-up after a long day, whether it’s in your car waiting for the traffic or the greeting as soon as you kick off your shoes at home. It’s bright, optimistic, hopeful swoosh of sound lifts all the darkness until pure, bright light shines through.
