Carlos Ucedda – Open Poison (2025)
While some music can become lost amidst our reviews not standing out at all, some make such a memorable impact that it is difficult to forget them – Carlos Ucedda is one of these artists. An eclectic Spanish artist revelling in the realm of alternative pop, big note on alternative to the point of avant-garde, the one thing we can expect from Ucedda is the unexpected. Previously, he shared his brand of synth-pop with songs like ‘Garden of Letters’ and ‘Inflatable e-Doll (Part One)’. Today, we take a look and listen to his most recent single, ‘Open Poison’.
Following the singles ‘Inflatable e-Doll (Part One)’ and ‘Black Rose, Your Chastity (Part Two)’, ‘Open Poison’ is another drag back to the 1980s synth-pop era, but this time the darkness of post-punk seems to peek through the sonic fog. Self-penned and produced, there is sophistication in the arrangement, yet something off-kilter and creepy exists in a distortion of synths, strings, and percussion.
While one might film ‘Open Poison’ as an alternative pop tune, there is something stronger and more intense bound in the tune. Perhaps it’s the entwining of strings adding their haunting sheen to the melody. Perhaps it’s Ucedda’s eerily eclectic falsetto vocals executed with operatic flair. Perhaps it’s the skin-tingling intensity of the music with its intoxicating wistfulness. Whatever it may be, ‘Open Poison’ is a track to wriggle in your ear and stick in your head for days to come.
Melodically, ‘Open Poison’ is impactful and significant; however, it is the lyricism that adds weightiness to this gothic song. Ucedda explains:
“The theme… behind this single is one where I make a burst of reflection… Inspired by vampire mythology, it reflects toxic friendships… The disturbance and manipulation of people with weak minds. Devastated by apathy and cowardice to the point of getting lost in it… losing your own identity and your own decision.”
In addition to the single, Ucedda released an official music video for ‘Open Poison’. You can view the video below and/or on his YouTube channel.
