Greenness – Hilltop (2025)

Inspired by the sounds of folktronica and trip-hop, then entwining those influences with various acoustic instruments, field recordings and evocative lyricism, Greenness is a UK-based duo daubing their sonic palette with an eclectic range of colours. The project of English composer and producer Graham Pratt and French singer-songwriter Cecile (Cess) Frangi, Greenness describe themselves as growing songs “…in our garden of earthly delights… Greenness is like a living ecosystem that keeps on growing and blossoming…” We first came across the pair a few years back with their well-received single, ‘Sphinx’. Join us as we delve into their most recent release, ‘Hilltop’.

Following the critically acclaimed 2022 album Sunrooms, Greenness return to the streaming world with ‘Hilltop’.  Considering the three-year hiatus, Grangi shares, “We’ve spent the past three years working on a new record, and it’s really exciting to finally share the first single…” – enter ‘Hilltop’. So, as a taster to the upcoming album, ‘Hilltop’ leans toward an indie-rock sound. Produced by Graham Pratt, there is a sophisticated elegance to ‘Hilltop’; however, simultaneously, raw naivety seems to saunter through the track, fluttering between the bold bass, soaring guitar, and toe-tapping drums.

Melodically, Greenness holds your hand, guiding you through a sonic forest while fairy lights sparkle along the path. Charming and confident, ‘Hilltop’ sparks with the hopefulness and confidence of exploring a fantastic world, but a peek of vulnerability is inserted with Frangi’s vocals delicately unpicking the intricate twirl of kaleidoscopic sound. For me, this melodic journey perfectly aligns with the theme of love, or the complexities of falling in love. Frangi explains:

“When writing the lyrics, I tried to capture the whirlwind feeling of falling deeply in love with someone and realising they’re about to turn your whole world upside down. It’s a song of dizzying heights and tender surrender.”

In addition to the single, Greenness released an official music video for their single ‘Hilltop’. You can view it below and/or on their YouTube channel.
