Track of the Day: Edie Yvonne – Darkness Bliss (2023)

Tiptoeing through the ups and downs of adolescence, Edie Yvonne navigates the happy, sad and complex world of growing up. At 14 years of age, there is an innocence about Yvonne with her charming smile and baby blue eyes. Then again, sophistication veils the raw innocence bringing an “old soul” quality to Yvonne and her moving melodies. With her well-received music and constantly growing fanbase, Yvonne resonates with listeners regardless of their age. Take her retro-pop single ‘Queen Bee’ – it’s a song about mean girls and minions that easily transcends age and culture.

Edie Yvonne made her way to The Other Side Reviews with her single ‘In The Rain’ and continued weaving her way into our hearts with ‘On Your Mind’ and ‘Queen Bee’. She returns with an intoxicating shower of sound in ‘Darkness Bliss’. She has been busy with seven singles released in 2023; however, each song brings a new drop of Yvonne building a kaleidoscopic personality set to take on the world.

Following ‘Queen Bee’, ‘Darkness Bliss’ retains the nostalgic flair of yesteryear and this time she leans toward 1970s rock. It may sound odd but a strong whisper of Led Zeppelin flits through in the simplistic melody. The opening guitar chords placed on a loop remind me of the iconic ‘Stairway To Heaven’, then again that’s just me.

Produced by Nicky Swedin and Cormac Liotta for Rrose Production, the simplistic arrangement draws together an underlying Led Zeppelin topped with a shiver of Yvonne’s traditional pop design. Her dulcet vocals ooze a raw cheekiness threaded through the vintage shiver of rock like an ethereal silver thread fluttering in a dark forest. Penned as the dramatic tale of a failed friendship, ‘Darkness Bliss’ is more experimental than Yvonne’s previous work. Displaying the innocence of a broken heart but with the weary worldliness of the “old soul”, ‘Darkness Bliss’ is a haunting breath of pain, despair and vulnerability.
