A Beech Landing – Better By Design (2025)
Born of the “selfish need for healing, and a need to test the limits of what is possible to create on a beech landing…”, singer-songwriter A Beech Landing is the artist for moments when you deal with inner conflict, the need for perfectionism, and a constant desire to up the ante – but it’s all in your head. With a single song to his name, the UK-based musician is a newbie of sorts, offering innocent vulnerability in his track, ‘Better By Design’. Yet, simultaneously, as much as there is raw naivety and immaturity, sophistication and maturity exceed a mere few minutes of music. Join us as we delve into A Beech Landing’s debut single, ‘Better By Design’.
A distorted concoction of dynamic guitars, a bold beat, percussion, and a plethora of analogue instrumentation, ‘Better By Design’ is off-kilter and gritty but also has a sense of soothing peeping from the edges of its sonic wrapper. Dragging us back to the alternative rock meets post-punk vibe soft vibes of yesteryear (think Depeche Mode meets Smashing Pumpkins), the track is old-school in its cinematic execution; a timelessness oozes from its flood of music, aligning with the ageless theme.
“The band was created as a therapeutic healing process to deal with something intense that was happening at the time, and it involved me using it every day to help cope with things and get things out of my head. I had to leave where I was living and move to a place where there was a tiny landing made of beech wood, thus the name… This particular song is about a Blur/Oasis-style rivalry between me and a friend’s band. They would put out a song, I’d try to do better… only the whole thing was in my head, and no one even knew about it… Just me on a beech landing.” – A Beech Landing on ‘Better By Design’
As a track of escapism and discovery, ‘Better By Design’ seems to capture the haziness of one’s thoughts, the confusion and disconcerting twirl of being caught in inner turmoil. You can lose yourself in its headiness, but the rich lyrics appear to be a guiding hand through the melee. As a debut track, it’s an interesting point of departure; I hope A Beech Landing has not peaked with ‘Better By Design’.
