Kat Kikta – Was It Almost Love? (2025)

Eager to delve into the grittier sides of relationships with all their complexity, intricacy, and sometimes dark tragedy, singer-songwriter Kat Kikta embraces listeners with her resonating lyricism and moving melodies. We came across Kikta several years back with her 2021 single, ‘I Let You Go’. In March this year, she graced our pages once again with the pro-peace anthem, ‘Cherry Trees’. Today, we take a look and listen to her most recent release, ‘Was It Almost Love?’.

Following her well-received singles ‘Cherry Trees’, ‘He Drives Me Crazy’ and ‘Voiceless Trees’, Kikta takes another step into 2025 with ‘Was It Almost Love?’. Self-composed, recorded and produced, the new single retains the airy pop-ness of Kikta’s signature sound but ups the level of obscurity and intimacy. Edging further into the realm of relationships, ‘Was It Almost Love?’ delicately unpicks the uncertainty of ending romances with vulnerability, fragility and a contrary slip of hopefulness lingering in the vocals. Kikta explains:

“At the centre of the song is this moment where you realise you don’t need someone else to feel love or to define your own sense of worth. It is a song for anyone who’s been broken-hearted, ghosted, and left wondering if that’s all they deserve in this life. We’re not meant to die with an ending of a relationship – but sometimes it feels that way. I wish this song brings hope, illumination and conclusion to those relationships which didn’t get closure.”

A simplistic tune, ‘Was It Almost Love?’ is an ethereal concoction of percussion and synths. To capture the barebones nature of the track’s theme, this minimalistic melody hints at an empty sparseness and hidden brashness. For me, it is not the avant-garde matching of instruments that really draws attention; it is the haunting vocals. Hushed and subdued, Kikta hardly sings but speaks like a comforting friend who caresses you with warmth without being too overwhelming. It’s this almost whispered sincerity that makes ‘Was It Almost Love?’ intimate, relatable and memorable.

In addition to the single, Kat Kikta released an official music video for ‘Was It Almost Love?’. You can view the video below and/or on her YouTube channel.
