The7thGatekeeper – You Are My Sunshine (2025)

Eagerly delving into the core of humanity, singer-songwriter The7thGatekeeper unpicks raw emotion and genuine experiences with delicate honesty and intimate intensity. Vulnerable and fragile, the Welsh musician draws you into a place of solace, but a thrust of melodic metal allows you the cry of relief with ferocity. We were introduced to The7thGatekeeper last year with his single, ‘Watch It Burn’, and continued to ride the rumbunctious creativity with 2025’s ‘Not To Be Taken’. Join us as we dive headfirst into the most recent release, ‘You Are My Sunshine’.

A cover of the classic single, ‘You Are My Sunshine’, The7thGatekeeper joins the likes of Ray Charles, Carly Simon, Tina Turner, Chris Stapleton and Christina Perri, bringing another edge to the 1939 classic. Describing himself as a fan of “…re-working songs by others, typically to make them heavier and darker…”, The7thGatekeeper adds a layer of Slipknot and Korn to ‘You Are My Sunshine’.

Soft and soothing, but with a gothic underbelly, this cover is creepy and kind of eerie – or at least that’s how it begins. In a haunting soundscape, The7thGatekeeper holds his hand out, leading you through a still, barebones sonic forest, quietly sauntering in the fog… then, it gets real. You might find a sense of calmness in the vulnerable tune; however, the crash of thunderous drums, a soaring guitar, and a rush of rugged vocals hit you in the face. A collision of sincere gentleness and forceful angst, ‘You Are My Sunshine’ takes an edgy, angular, rollercoaster twist to the original.

By no means is this a brand-new take on ‘You Are My Sunshine’ with different artists bringing a specific flair. Christina Perri’s synths, Chris Stapleton’s Americana and Doris Day’s 1930s croon – The7thGatekeeper just takes a metal twist. Then again, it is this brash turn, twist and reworking that not only makes this cover unique, but enhances the message within ‘You Are My Sunshine’. In the flutter of hard rock and melodic metal, we find duality where you might not expect sunshine, but the exquisite crash of dark and light makes the song beam with the profoundness of finding a bright silver lining in desperate emotions.
