VERA – Ketchup (2025)
You know that moment when something casual suddenly sparks into something greater – I’m not talking about a relationship or anything, but rather about how music sessions can inspire a full-fledged band; enter VERA. The confidence, camaraderie and chemistry between Sarah Toner (vocals), Matt Holland (guitar and keys), David Dalzell (bass) and Darragh Tibbs (drums) resulted in a need “…share our souls with the masses, and we pour them into each song.” The latest addition to their discography is the single, ‘Ketchup’.
Following the well-received ‘Skinbag’, the relatively new Irish foursome team up with producer Declan Legg to create ‘Ketchup’. Co-produced by Legge and Tibbs, ‘Ketchup’ showcases another side to VERA’s musical repertoire. While ‘Skinbag’ leaned strongly toward a heavier alternative rock, ‘Ketchup’ is a melodic twirl of soul with classic rock piercing the slick arrangement. Built in a clever bubble of sound, the track presents maturity for the young group; however, there is a recklessness in the underbelly of the melody, surfacing as the single rushes toward its triumphant close.
The bass, guitars and drums oscillate between soothing soul and pulsating beats of rock, with each individual shining. ‘Ketchup’, however, is brought to life by Sarah Toner. Sexy, smooth and sassy, she injects an enigmatic brush of Florence Welch but with a voice that is entirely her own. It’s as if the hushed vibe of those singers rides along while Toner showcases her powerful pipes. When speaking of ‘Ketchup’, she explains:
“’Ketchup’ isn’t a song about a real experience. The visual image of having ketchup stains all down my shirt is sort of a character thing… I imagine someone sat eating a burger alone in some sleazy diner, despairing about their relationship and what to do to get out of it, but knowing deep down they’re not going anywhere. I think the image of a mess you’ve made yourself stuck in my head. Not to say I haven’t been in that situation myself… but I think we all get ketchup stains on our shirts now and again.”
