Every Other Weekend – Come Back (When You Feel Like) (2025)
The brainchild of veteran singer-songwriter Chris Bull, most well-known as the former frontman of Manchester-based City Reign, Every Other Weekend is a solo project of love, loss and solace. Following City Reign’s final album, Daesein, in 2015, Bull stepped away from the music scene, finding it difficult to create music after his father’s passing – he describes it as “a quiet and private depression” Yet, the burning passion for music remained with simmering embers before sparking into a fiery flare this year. Join us as we delve into Every Other Weekend’s debut single, ‘Come Back (When You Feel Like)’.
Recorded and produced by Chris Bull, with some help from former Abbey Road engineer Mick Morrison, ‘Come Back (When You Feel Like)’ took shape in Bull’s mother’s garage using his father’s old recording equipment. Released as his debut single, but also the first release from an upcoming album, All Present and Inept, ‘Come Back (When You Feel Like)’ leans toward an old-school indie-rock meets Britpop sound. While the crashing drums, bold bass, soaring guitars and sparkling keys whirl about with full-bodied flair, there is a juxtaposition in its production where the mature arrangement meets in an echo chamber, giving the track sparseness and weightiness.
A song of solace and resolution, I feel the production quality is ideal. Recorded in a garage, you can hear the emptiness and space in the track; however, there is a harmonic fullness that is simultaneously emotional and physical. When speaking about ‘Come Back (When You Feel Like)’, Bull explains:
“Really, it is a kind of hymn to self-forgiveness. It was a reminder that self-expression and the things that bring us joy never leave us. And if we have to put them down from time to time to give ourselves space to deal with the challenges life throws at all of us, that’s ok too.”
Sincere and sentimental, Every Other Weekend unpicks the fragility or raw human emotion with an intricate melody. If this single is the beginning, I cannot wait for that upcoming album.
