Tiny Cities – Body Cast (2025)
Drawing together the musical stylings of Melissa Anthony and Dennis King, Tiny Cities is a duo that celebrates those quiet areas in life, from the dark corners to the pleasantly bright alleys. With their debut EP, The Wind Can Be So Cruel, the US-based pair began sharing their music with the masses; their first single, ‘Hologram’, started turning heads, establishing a sound that has been described as “one of the most compelling indie voices of the moment”. Join us as we delve into their most recent release, ‘Body Cast’.
Following the single ‘it’s only your memory’, and the EP, Under the Covers, ‘Body Cast’ retains the folk-pop tone heard in ‘it’s only your memory’; however, a sense of melancholy and downcast looks weave across the melody. Produced by Eric E. Sanderson, the single is soothing and gentle as Anthony’s acoustic guitar captures old-school folk sentiments. King’s electric guitar glides along with charm, while Jeremy Gustin’s drums whisper behind a dynamic bass. For me, it is the percussion lingering in the background that gives ‘Body Cast’ an edge, possibly contributing to a veil of haunting that breathes despair.
The melody itself has a powerful effect, despite its subdued presentation, but it is the theme and Anthony’s vocals that add weight to ‘Body Cast’. Like a ghost floating along in the dead of night with a chilling sensation, her dulcet vocals are both angelic and eerie. Aligning with the message of self-destruction, touching on how rejuvenation can be complicated, Tiny Cities explain:
“The song is about the self-destructive side of us that can sometimes crave those old habits when you finally get to a place of safety and comfort.”
Sincere and sentimental, Tiny Cities is a silvery light in a deep, dark pool with ‘Body Cast’. If this is anything to go by, I am eager to hear their upcoming album, Beginning of the End.
In addition to the single, Tiny Cities released a music video for ‘Body Cast’. You can view the video below and/or on their YouTube channel.
