Track of the Day: Free Carmen – From The Rain (2025)

Since their formation in 2024, Free Carmen has been developing and refining their alternative rock sound. Firmly rooted in the power of organic expression and live performance, the foursome are self-described as an “alternative rock band. Bringing big sound, bigger energy, and sometimes accidentally yet perfectly timed silence.” This is our introduction to the Finnish group, and one element that stands above all else is the players’ profound understanding and camaraderie, contributing to the perfectly timed silences, perhaps? Join us as we delve into their single, ‘From The Rain’.

In 2025, Free Carmen released two 8-track albums – Solstice I and Solstice II – to form their overall double-sided debut album. Inspired by the natural cycle of the year, the songs “unfold like the seasons, moving from brightness into darkness and back again.” Taken from Solstice II, ‘From The Rain’ marks an aspect of the icier, wetter, murkier winter solstice.

Self-recorded and produced, ‘From The Rain’ is one of the, I suppose, calmer and more soothing tracks on Solstice II. While I can hear slips of Radiohead in the fusion of pounding drums, a strong bassline, and soaring guitar entwined like a shining indie-rock potion, a hit of classic rock lingers in the lead guitar riffs. Jumping about 30 years from early 90s rock to 2026, Free Carmen showcases how music is not bound by time, space, distance or genre.

Despite the heavier rock sounds weaving and bobbing along in ‘From The Rain’, the track remains, ultimately, a soft, smooth, mellifluous wave of alternative rock. Aptly named, the single is like stepping into a warm cabin, leaving the cold, pouring rain outside. You shake the drops off your coat and try to dry your hair a bit, while the lads of Free Carmen get you a cup of tea and some chocolate biscuits to enjoy before the fire. For me, this may be our introduction to the group, but the rich vocals and heartfelt music are like hugging an old friend instead of greeting a new acquaintance.
