Ananya Ashok – First Love (2026)
Bridging the realms of genres, eras and cultures, singer-songwriter Ananya Ashok crafts songs that are rich in storytelling, powerful in melodies and brimming with emotion. Rooted in traditional Carnatic music, but inspired by contemporary folk-pop, Ashok offers deeply personal, intimate and cathartic solace with every note. This is our introduction to the musician, but she has already earned numerous awards, received critical acclaim across the globe and performed on international stages across Singapore, Indie, the United States and the UAE – so we’re rather late to the party. Better late than never, join us as we delve into her single, ‘First Love’.
Taken from her debut EP, Promising Youngster, ‘First Love’ is the “twist on a traditional love song…” Instead of exploring the fragile fractures in broken romance, Ashok opts to “…navigate identity fractures and generational pressure… an act of retrieval that reconnects with the intuitive protector and the “child that dreamed”, ultimately finding home within oneself…” It’s heartfelt and tender, honest and raw; yet, somehow, it brims with the bold confidence of empowerment and resilience of a person standing her ground.
Produced by Denny White, Promising Youngster explores the issues of displacement, anxiety, and self-reclamation – ‘First Love’ being the latter, perfectly placed as the closing track of the EP. As with the other tracks – ‘Promising Youngster’, ‘Little Voice’, ‘Unrealized Dreams’ and ‘Humpty’ – ‘First Love’ uses a Veena foundation in an acoustic setting. Yet, unlike the other tracks, ‘First Love’ is lighter, airier, and touches your heart with its soothing, sentimental tone. A combination of Veena, piano and slips of strings, there is a slight haunting in the song… then again, these elements contribute to the languid tranquillity of the song.
For me, the instrumentation of ‘First Love’ is enough to slap a smile on my face with its whispery allure, but it is Ashok’s alto that seemingly leads you through the track and on a journey of self-discovery and reclamation. Rich and warm, she’s the friend who holds your hand, acting as a joyful, smiling anchor in the wash of music.
