Track of the Day: Charlie and the Moonshine – El Diablo (2026)

Walking the line between soulful, gritty Southern rock and the highlands of Mexico, Charlie and the Moonshine is a band rooted in Mexico but aiming to reach beyond its borders with an Americana flair. Unafraid to delve into existential issues of love, loss, and the search for meaning, the lads bring rock sensuality with raw, imperfect energy. With only two singles to their name – the sophomore release to be reviewed – there isn’t too much to go on; however, musicians don’t need an extensive background to have an impact. Will ‘El Diablo’ impress us? Keep reading to find out.

Following their debut single, ‘The Quest’, ‘El Diablo’ is a song of yearning and romance, but not quite the rom-com Hallmark film ending in a happy pairing of the couple. No, it is forbidden desire and want wrapped in a sensual, dark blanket, with a raw allure that leaves you wondering if this should even be unveiled. Charlie and the Moonshine explain:

“’El Diablo’ is a dark, sensual love story about the Devil falling in love with a powerful woman – a forbidden romance told from the other side of desire and damnation… a tragic love song about temptation, longing, and the price of loving someone you can’t have. At its core, the song is also a tribute to feminine power – the idea that even a figure like the Devil can be undone by a woman’s strength and presence.”

Self-recorded and produced, ‘El Diablo’ might have Charlie and the Moonshine peeping at Americana; however, and this is to my ear, ‘El Diablo’ is far more blues-rock than what we hear in quintessential Americana. Rubbing Gary Moore-esque guitars and heavy drums on a solid burst of Delta blues, ‘El Diablo’ is that rock song oozing the pain of yearning with the sweet sensation of letting the cards lie where they fall.

Charlie and the Moonshine might be new to our ears, but their maturity, sophistication, and raw appeal make them ones to watch and remember.
