Track of the Day: Local Bylaws – Benton

Described by Clout as “…frenetic, modern punk…”, San Francisco group Local Bylaws can grab you by the collar, twirl you about, make you a bit dizzy – and you’ll love every second. Bringing together the energetic, um, energy of Ginger Pennington (vocals and lyrics), Alex Rocheleau (guitar), Matthew Hash (bass) and Jeremy Korkki (drums), the female-fronted foursome is a force to be reckoned with. This is my introduction to Local Bylaws, but they are already turning heads across the globe with their powerful music. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Benton’.

Following the release of their EP Working Agreement (released in 2021), Local Bylaws were compared to No Doubt, Letters To Cleo and The Interrupters with their passionate sound. In ‘Benton’, the lads and lady continue their brash style with an aggressive punk-inspired tune. Pounding drums, powerful guitars and Pennington’s bold vocals make for a mind-blowing two minutes of music.

I can definitely hear the similarity to No Doubt, but a contemporary edginess is woven into the old-school pop-punk. What I truly love about ‘Benton’ is the way they insert sweet, grin-inducing vibes into a chaotic mishmash of instruments. To my ears, there is a sweetness to Pennington’s vocal tones; however, the crash of frenzied instruments around it induces a manic sensation.

Along with the melodic madness, Local Bylaws flex their “in your face” style with intriguing lyricism. They explain that ‘Benton’ is a “snarky old-school punk anthem that shuns the status quo but still shines with positivity…” So, in true punk style, Local Bylaws take on the existential issues but retains empowerment in the chaos.

On a personal level, I adore this track and Local Bylaws; however, I have one complaint when it comes to ‘Benton’ – it’s too short!
