Alwyn Morrison – Puzzle Piece (2026)

Ending 2025 with his well-received EP Heartsplit, singer-songwriter Alwyn Morrison enters the new year – and starts a new chapter – with his single ‘Puzzle Piece’. While the theme of his music remains similar, exploring the complexities of connection and intricate issues of self-discovery, there is a seeming change in his musical style; a leaning toward versatility and innovation through a sonic pivot. Join us as we take a look at the single, ‘Puzzle Piece’.

Produced by Michael Carey and Morrison, with mixing by Alex Aldi and mastering by Nathan Dantzler, ‘Puzzle Piece’ is darker, more intense, and brimming with a heavier leaning of alternative rock. Unlike Heartsplit, which is a lace of indie-pop/indie-rock melodies, this new tune showcases a more mature side of Morrison – full-bodied, weightier, and harder-hitting. Interestingly, while the single reminds me of the alt-rock sound of the 2000s, a contemporary vibe makes it suited to those with preferences for then, now, and, I’m betting, beyond 2026.

Morrison hints that while future material builds upon rock roots, a shimmering introduction of “darker electronic textures… and dreamy synth atmospheres” should reach our ears; but, until then, the crashing drums and dynamic bass keep listeners anchored in ‘Puzzle Piece’ with synthesisers adding a sparkle to the sides, and a guitar soars in a rollercoaster ride of rhythmic riffs. A particular note needs to be made for the outstanding, driving guitar solo, offering a truly powerful burst of rock, upping the ante in its tone. While the melody is solid with a steady sound, Morrison’s vocals dance with you in his rich, full tenor; not free-flowing or wistful, but strong, vibrant and daring.

Personally, I enjoy the melody, but there is a chance that ’Puzzle Piece ’ might fall short for those who don’t show a preference for alternative rock. I do, however, recommend everyone give it a listen because it might just change your mind. If this is what Morrison begins 2026 with, then I am eager to hear more.
