AA-Legrand – Pacific EP (2022)

With his debut EP, Pacific EP, AA-Legrand transports listeners to a new world full of nostalgic charm and subtle hints of the unknown. Across the three tracks, he sprinkles indie folk sensibilities with electronic elements to form a guitar-driven journey lit up by hushed vocals. The lush atmosphere of the EP is a wonderful introduction to his sound that encircles you and has you sinking into its richness.

Through this musical project, Simeon Loth takes elements from classic folk and takes them to a new level with some electronic touches. After spending years roaming the Berlin folk scene and playing in various bands across different genres, he started creating his own music in 2019. Producing all his music himself, he offers a small piece of himself to listeners through each track.

The EP opens with ‘Shade of a Giant’ and its gentle guitar tone that reminds you of a misty morning. There is a chilled earthiness to the melody that runs across your skin and has you relaxing into the melody. Floating over the guitar line are the vocals that have an electronic edge to them that causes a reaching echo. This enhances the mistiness of the soundscape as the vocals reach out into the distance, fading into an unknown wall of fog. You can hear a touch of traditional folk in the delivery of the vocals, but this is given a contemporary feeling by the melody. As the single progresses, the mistiness starts to fade and you are treated to the majesty of what lies beyond. It is a wonderful opening track that really sets the lush atmosphere of the EP.

‘Slow Sleep Fall’ trades the guitar for the delicate pluck of a piano in the opening. Where the opening track was a misty morning, this one takes you to a meadow with a gentle breeze stirring the long grass around you. The melody is undeniably relaxing and you will feel the stress of the world lifting from your muscles and being replaced with easiness. There is less electronic touch to the vocals that allows them to shine gently down on you as they move through the soundscape like fluffy clouds meandering across the sky. The tenderness of the melody and the gentle touch of the vocals allows you to sink into the lyrics that are worth the time to really listen to them. The gentleness of the track gives way to a stripped-back feeling in the last moments of the track that really brings the emotions of the vocals home.

The EP closes with ‘All Your Love’ and the heavier electronic edge in the opening. There are electronic pulses and beeps that meet the softness of the more organic movement. The strum of the guitar has you floating forward on the soft winds of the ambient atmospheric tones. The vocals settle around you like a soft blanket bringing a feeling of warmth, while letting you slowly drift off on the movement of the single. As with the other tracks, there is a deep feeling of relaxation woven into the track that lets you sit back and take in what the lyrics have to say. As the single progresses, there is a sweep of sound that leads you to a gentle crescendo that is utterly beautiful.

AA-Legrand has you relaxing into the softness of his sound as you float down the lush tracks of Pacific EP and give in to the journey of the lyrics. Each track has its own softness that lifts your troubles and replaces the stress in your muscles with peace. By the end of the EP, you will feel rejuvenated and ready to face the world with a smile on your face.
