Alan Dreezer – Apart (2025)
For over twenty years, singer-songwriter Alan Dreezer has been daubing his sonic palette with various colours of diverse genres ranging from soul and pop to indie-rock and funk. He originally began as a multi-award-winning part of the pop duo Tara 2; however, it is his solo project that has kept our attention for s few years now. In 2017, UK-based Dreezer leapt, and his 2018 debut album, LONDON E12, announced him as a musician with flair. In 2022, his single ‘Butterfly’ turned heads, voted as “Best Pop Song Of The Year” by Indie Boulevard. Last year, his successful single ‘(Love Didn’t Hurt Me) IT WAS YOU’ won the “Song of the Year” at Orpheus Global Independent Music Awards.
Alright, brief history lesson over, let’s get on with the review of his latest single ‘Apart’.
Following the well-received 2024 singles, ‘(Love Didn’t Hurt Me) IT WAS YOU’ and ‘Take Me Back’, ‘Apart’ shifts from a toe-tapping soul-filled melody to a heavier slick of pop-soul bound in a heart-wrenching ballad. I can suggest that ‘Apart’ retains the lilt of George Michael’s Older era; however, this is not necessarily due to the harmonic tapestry of piano, drums, and strings, but more the heartfelt tragedy lying at its core.
Recorded and produced with long-time collaborator Elliot Richardson, ‘Apart’ has the sophistication of mature production – Richardson sprinkling his magical arrangement glitter across the song. Yet, in the same breath, the elegance of ‘Apart’ is shrouded in palpable heartache and tension. Carried along a dark sonic river with glistening ripples lapping on the boat, ‘Apart’ delves into the complexity of human relationships. Dreezer explains:
“’Apart’ is a real departure musically and tonally from the previous four catchy, radio-friendly pop/soul releases. Leaning heavily this time on the influence from artists RYX and James Blake, this… straight from the heart epic deals with navigating through the pain of an amicable relationship breakdown.”
The fifth track from his upcoming album, NOTHING CHANGES IF NOTHING CHANGES, ‘Apart’ showcases the poignant profundity of Dreezer’s musicality. As I wait for the forthcoming album, I will content myself with ‘Apart’ and Dreezer’s current discography. I only hope the wait isn’t too long because I am excited for more from this artist.
