Aldo Volt – Disco Berlin (2025)
Existing at the intersection of rock, synthwave and pop, musician Aldo Volt binds diverse genres with absolute ease. Hailing from Paris, the French artist calls to the intimacy of French chanson but with the intensity of raw rock rhythms, appealing to audiences of different preferences, genres, and even generations as he fuses retro with contemporary. The latest addition to his discography is the single, ‘Disco Berlin’.
Following his singles ‘Caravane’ and ‘Exil Exil’, Volt takes his third step into 2025 with ‘Disco Berlin’. Is it a step, a stomp or a saunter? Given the twinkling flair of the track, the shimmering kaleidoscopic ambience, and the feeling of being lost in a sonic whirlpool, it’s probably all three. Self-composed and produced, ‘Disco Berlin’ shifts from the previous tracks – already diverse in themselves – to a fresh entwining of vintage synth-pop with a heavy electronic flavour in the bold beats, soothing synths and interspersed keys, showcasing another side to his multi-faceted personality.
Aptly titled, ‘Disco Berlin’ is a track made for the dancefloor and anthemic in its own way. A sense of duality exists in ‘Disco Berlin’, so it is confident and loud, but also veiled, giving a multi-coloured pulse to the subdued sentimentality. Volt’s hushed vocals highlight this contrary nature, lingering with rich power and force, but still executed in a soft, serene whisper.
As with the Irish, I am a fan of the French. From the romantic language and accent to iconic actors, intriguing cinematic styles, and passionate musicians. So, it makes sense that I would enjoy Aldo Volt’s music, even if there is a slight bias. Am I a fan? Well, I find Volt’s music enjoyable, and his diversity keeps me wondering what his next release will be. Yet, ‘Disco Berlin’ is not overly memorable; a song where you sing those few lines you know, but can be lost in a mountain of pop songs. While ‘Disco Berlin’ might not be my cup of tea, I am no less intrigued by Volt’s upcoming EP. It should be interesting.
