Amy Field – Universe (2025)
While being part of the alternative rock four-piece, In Situ, singer-songwriter Amy Field is quickly becoming a solo artist alongside In Situ. Hailing from Norwich, the UK-based individual steps into the limelight as a rising singer-songwriter in the alternative rock scene. Inspired by the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eminem and Brandi Carlisle, there is an old-school intensity to Field’s music with provocative lyricism entrenched in powerful melodies. While Spotify marks her debut single as 2019’s ‘Holding On’, it is her 2025 releases – ‘Be There’, ‘Come Home’ and ‘Universe’ – that present Field’s evolution as a musician. Join us as we delve into her most recent single, ‘Universe’.
Keeping the momentum going, ‘Universe’ leans further toward a heavier, harder alternative rock beat than ‘Come Home’ or ‘Be There’. Just as Field’s vocals can hold the sassiness and sultriness of the soul singles, ‘Universe’ is a pivotal point highlighting the rock-inspired boldness of her rich tones. Recorded and produced at Crystal Sound Studios with Jack Murphy, the pulsating drumbeats act like a heartbeat in the background, while a bass weaves beneath; however, it is Robby Hodgey’s skilled guitar that adds greater emotion and weightiness to ‘Universe’.
Interestingly, while the arrangement of ‘Universe’ is a cohesive blend of Field’s rich vocals and the instrumentation, particularly Hodgey’s guitar, this blossoming melodic romance is tinged with separation where each element demands attention despite the soothing flow. Field’s voice certainly has the sophistication and elegance to capture your heart; however, it is the guitar and drums that can stick in your ear and rattle around your brain. Put the two together, and ‘Universe’ is a song to mesmerise and take you to that universe where only music makes sense.
One of her listeners mentioned that ‘Universe’ “…sounds like a James Bond theme song…” – in my opinion, it definitely has the style and attitude demanded of a Bond song. From Shirley Bassey’s ‘Goldfinger’ to Carly Simon’s ‘Nobody Does It Better’, Tina Turner’s ‘Golden Eye’ and Garbage’s ‘The World Is Not Enough’, each song is different, but the sensuality, subdued sultriness, and underlying passion of the Bond charm exists. For me, Amy Field hits those markers with ‘Universe’.
