Anaté – After (2022)

Drawing together their diverse influences and musical backgrounds, singer-songwriter Ana and producer Andrea formed the insatiable Anaté. Influenced by artists like Massive Attack, Pink Floyd, Lenny Kravitz and Sade, one would imagine Anaté to have a rock meets trip-hop meets smoking soul sound, and you’d be right (sort of). I don’t enjoy categorising bands but the soulfulness of Ana’s vocals with Andrea’s ethereal arrangements makes for a nostalgic rock-soul-synth sound. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘After’.

Formed in 2019, Anaté has been sharing their music with the masses for about four years and they’ve turned our heads along with everyone else. Following their track ‘Delito’, the pair adopt a smooth, laidback style with ‘After’. Interestingly enough, while the chilled vibes can be felt in the single, ‘After’ is actually an upbeat pop song to be played at any festival. This movement from slow and ethereal to bouncy and high-paced highlights the group’s innovativeness and distinctive style.

Unlike the track ‘Delito’ which adopts an almost flamenco guitar style in the melody, ‘After’ is far more commercial. As I mentioned, Ana and Andrea are innovative, and their genre-defying repertoire is evidence of this. In ‘After’ there is both melancholy and joy with Ana’s bold vocals and lyricism, yet Andrea weaves a cinematic haze into the melody. So, we have a hazy ambience but with a toe-tapping “in your face” attitude as well.

“’After’ is the first song of the upcoming EP Fume. We wrote it with a more laidback approach to the contemplating lyrics of the first album Confessions, moving also towards mainstream pop sounds – which will characterise the entire EP. ‘After’ talks about recurring mistakes and the guilty pleasures we get out of them.” – Anaté on ‘After’
