Shockpowder – Talking To Plants (2022)

For a little over five years, UK-based Shockpowder has released critically acclaimed music, toured across Europe, and featured in notable press. Described Karl Is My Unkle as a unique “fusion between metal and shoegaze…”, the innovative act is redefining genres and is not to be pigeonholed. Founded by guitar and vocalist Joshua Scurfield, Shockpowder brings dreamy sounds catering to the surreal and ethereal. The latest addition to Shockpowder’s well-received repertoire is the single ‘Talking To Plants’.

Hot on the heels of their single ‘Human’, ‘Talking To Plants’ adopts a dreamy but equally hard-hitting metal sound. With a powerful arrangement intertwining heavy guitars with pounding drums, Shockpowder hit you in the chest with ‘Talking To Plants’. The interesting thing about this arrangement is while there is a tough grittiness to it, it presents a softer, floating element in the hard-hitting metal blasts.

Unlike ‘Human’, ‘Talking To Plants’ has a soothing gentleness in the heavy melody. I suppose you could say its wistful ambience is less “punchy” than the upbeat, high-energy ‘Human’. Then again, the kaleidoscopic soundscape of ‘Talking To Plants’ has its own high-energy sensation in the whimsical flow.

Oozing eclecticism and innovation, Shockpowder take you on a journey with their intriguing song ‘Talking To Plants’, however, the intrigue is not in the melody alone. Shockpowder explains that this single “…uses a nostalgic, dreamy sound to draw in images of the natural world through the eyes of someone who is terribly alone.” As such, Shockpowder expresses despair and melancholic desperation in ‘Talking To Plants’.

Sincere, sentimental and genuine, Shockpowder explores human fragility with their vulnerable and intimate track ‘Talking To Plants’.
