Che – Mystery Team (2020)

It’s often that experience can lead to expertise, but that’s not always the case. It might be that an artist deteriorates as the year’s pass; however, that is not Che! Hailing from South East London, the multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter has “been on the scene” for over two decades.

Che began his career in the late 1990s as a drummer in a post-punk band but soon went on to join Dusty Muzzle and Princip as a frontman. Finally, after a long and successful time performing with bands, Che embarked upon a solo project. In fact, we went to win the Best Solo Artist at the TC Indie Awards in 2019. The latest addition to his growing discography is ‘Mystery Team’.

In anticipation of Che’s upcoming debut album, ‘Mystery Team’ is the follow-up to his well-received single ‘Almost Ready’. With only two tracks in his solo project, one would imagine Che to still be in the stages of “finding a sound”; however, this talented musician seems to have defined himself as being a genre-melding and boundary-breaking artist.

Moving from the harder, heavier rock sounds of ‘Almost Ready’, influenced by Queens of the Stone Age and Tenacious D, ‘Mystery Team’ embraces a lighter indie-rock design. Showing a similarity to The Seahorses, Supertramp and Dodgy, the track is more energetic and upbeat. Combining Che’s bold vocals with dynamic guitars and pounding drums, ‘Mystery Team’ is brusque, beguiling and, well, beautiful. While Che self-produced a music video for ‘Mystery Team’ (as seen above), one does not need to watch it to feel the impassioned flamboyance of the artist and his music – it’s just obvious from the first chord.
