Closer – Int’u (2025)
The Scottish band Closer were making waves in the early 2000s when the trio found themselves signed to Adomo Records – big back then but now defunct – touring across the UK and Europe; then, they fell into the realms of hiatus taking a break due to a “combination of fatigue and a big guy with a beard…” Now, step back everyone because Closer is back with optimistic zeal to stamp their name on the pop rock scene once again. Join us as we delve into their new single, ‘Int’u’.
The first single in three years, ‘Int’u’ drags people back to the alternative meets pop-rock sounds of the late 1990s. Lying somewhere between Weezer, Jimmy Eat World, and Wheatus with a hint of Green Day, Closer gives you the warm fuzzies in a comfortable blanket of pop-rock as you grin with nostalgic joy. Bound in a kaleidoscopic weave of crashing drums, soaring guitars, and a dynamic bass, it’s the happy place of yesteryear, breathing life into the memories of 20 or so years ago.
One aspect, well two aspects really, that I find intriguing about ‘Int’u’ is how the rhythmic harmony oozes from the track, but each instrument seems to slide across each other with individuality – somehow demanding attention before joining in union. Moreover, the vocals ring with rich warmth while offering a cool demeanour.
Alright, so that’s one aspect; here’s the other. Returning to the music scene after a few years, it is amusing that Closer releases a nostalgic song brimming with happy memories. Using raw lyricism, echo-laced vocals, and moving music, ‘Int’u’ is the emotionally charged tale and “…wistful glance in the rearview mirror…” Frontman David Wason noted the single was inspired by rediscovering old band photos – “I started thinking about who we were back then, how fast it all went, and how beautiful it was in its chaos…”
Sincere, sentimental and a real tug at the heart strings, ‘Int’u’ can have you reflecting on yesteryear with wistful smiles, sighs of nostalgia, and sometimes a cringe or two at what happened on the road.
