Eve Goodman + Sera – Cwlwm Cariad (2025)
Hailing from the scenic surroundings of North Wales, singer-songwriters Eve Goodman and Sera bring the sincerity, serenity and sentimentality of folk music to our ears. Both artists with rising careers in the UK folk scene, the pair brought together their talents in 2019 after being selected as BBC Horizons Artists. From the outset, they sparked, and the chance of an intriguing duo was quickly discovered. Skip ahead a few years, and along with their solo projects, Goodman and Sera collaborate on the upcoming album, Natur. Set for release later this year, the pair are currently giving us tastes of the album with single releases. The latest addition to their discography is ‘Cwlwm Cariad’.
Following the well-received single ‘Blodyn Gwyllt’, ‘Cwlwm Cariad’ retains the simplicity of traditional folk; however, it somehow takes things down another step. From a bundle of acoustic guitars and percussion carrying the ladies’ calming vocals, ‘Cwlwm Cariad’ is a raw piano-driven ballad with only the piano and two voices. Recorded at Wild End Studio with Colin Bass, the track oozes barebones rawness. Then again, while ‘Cwlwm Cariad’ is sparse and minimalistic, there is an all-encompassing wealth of harmonies and soul-calming fullness. This only proves that you don’t need bells and whistles or bombastic blasts of loud music to be all-encompassing and beautiful.
A haunting song with Goodman and Sera’s vocals softly crawling beneath your skin and leaving you breathless, ‘Cwlwm Cariad’ is a host of sirens captivating your mind with silvery tones. Unlike sirens, the pair are not drawing you to your doom, but the lyricism is tied up in the perilous complexities of love. Unpicking the delicate fragility of “flying too close to the flame”, Goodman and Sera offer sincere insight into human connection.
