Feral Family – Down In The Dirt (2025)

When I heard, or rather read, the term “feral family”, my mind immediately jumped to a band of feral coyotes ravaging the wide boundaries of the Ponderosa – yes, I watch a lot of westerns. While the UK-based band Feral Family may not come at you with sharp teeth and sneers, the lads offer raw energy in their sound, sparking from the outset. Jamie Lowe (vocals and bass), Oscar Woods (guitar), and Regan Grimson (drums) are known for their energetic, enthusiastic, confident performances playing alongside The Heavy North, but now sell out headlining shows. We came across Feral Family a couple of years ago, but today we’re reintroduced to the group with their new single, ‘Down In The Dirt’.

Keeping the momentum from their singles ‘The Balance’ and ‘Feels So Right’, Feral Family drag us back to the 90s alternative rock scene with ‘Down In The Dirt’. Produced with Liam Radburn, the track is a moody swoop of a bold bass, soaring guitar, crashing drums, and Lowe’s rich vocals. A song not to be heard but experienced, Feral Family set you adrift on a dark sonic river with light glistening off the glassy surface. Soft and smooth in its brooding lament, you travel across the melody quickly becoming used to the ripples gently rocking the boat.

‘Down In The Dirt’ is tranquil, calm and mellifluous despite the pensive, sombre reflection; however, you can see tumultuous swirls below, and the crashing waves are about to arrive. Oddly enough, the powerful guitar riffs and crashing drums might linger in those threatening waves, but they never surface – well, not really. A contemplative rush of music that has both tragic serenity and entwined ferocity.

Melodically, an intriguing, complex few minutes, yet it is the theme that truly deciphers the haunting sound. Jamie Lowe explains: “I wanted to capture that moment of surrender when hope fades. It’s not just about losing love, it’s about losing faith in the idea of it.”

In addition to the single, Feral Family released a live video for ‘Down In The Dirt’. You can view the video below and/or on their YouTube channel.

If you’d like to enjoy the live sound Feral Family at a gig, the lads will be performing at Aaatma, Manchester on 18 December.
