Forgotten Garden – Overlord (2026)

Typically sharing songs that traverse the poignant, melancholic, and less joyful areas of life, Forgotten Garden can tear your heart (not literally) with their wistful haze of sonic sadness. We came across the Scottish-Portuguese duo in 2020 with their dark single, ‘Broken Pieces’, and continued reviewing their music with singles ‘Bad Guy’ and ‘Memoriam’. While review-wise we took a bit of a break from Forgotten Garden, by no means did they remove themselves from our view. From dark wave territory to folk-tinged rock, and today a dash of indie-pop in the light, Forgotten Garden showcase their versatility in telling sad stories with ‘Overlord’.

Following the 2025 singles ‘Five Minutes’ and ‘James’, Scotland-based Danny Elliot and Portugal-based Ines Rebelo saunter into 2026 with ‘Overlord’. Produced by Elliot, the track reminds me slightly of Depeche Mode with a shimmering flush of synths and drums. Yet, while there is a drag of nostalgia to yesteryear, Forgotten Garden add a unique individuality to the track with indie-pop twirls. Rebelo’s sweet vocals lean toward the likes of Florence Welch; however, there is a dark vulnerability and melancholy distinctive of Forgotten Garden.

While technically a duo with Elliot on instruments and Rebelo on vocals, Forgotten Garden collaborate with other musicians – as is the case on ‘Overlord’. The soaring guitar, so delicately woven in the twinkling sonic blanket, is courtesy of Argentina-based Mel D. For me, it is not only the melody’s sound that has it standing out, but the alignment of noise with lyrical theme. Forgotten Garden explain:

“The concept of greed resonates throughout the song as the protagonist always wants more money despite being very rich. Having amassed so much wealth, the empowered subject of the song believes themselves to be “above the law”. Naturally, though, they hide their nefarious activities and live life as a “smokescreen gangster”… ‘Overlord’ is a… song about money, power, greed and deceit, and how it can corrupt an individual. This is an age-old story that seems even more pertinent today.”

In addition to the single, Forgotten Garden released an official music video for ‘Overlord’. You can view the video below and/or on their YouTube channel.
