Genevieve Sovereign – It’s Yours (2022)

Through the tracks of her debut EP, It’s Yours, Genevieve Sovereign brings a quest for self-understanding to our ears. While taking this journey, she weaves in a connection with something bigger than herself. The poetic lyrics of certain songs are separated by instrumental pieces that float into meaningful spaces, as she bridges experiences and different worlds.

While the single marks her first EP release, it is also the end of a year-long vlogging adventure. Touching on her personal journey, the tracks of the EP explore the unique potential in all of us and the moments in our lives that make us who we are. Bringing a range of genres and melodic styles together, Sovereign shows skills and artistry far beyond her newcomer status.

The EP opens with ‘Savouring Today’ that grabs your attention with the deep bass that vibrates through you. The bass leads you into a lighter tone that has a subtle bounce to it. The music feels like there is a lot more resting beneath the top layer. This feeling is enhanced by the rustle of tones that fills the lower layers of the melody. Through all of this, the music carries a steady forward momentum that has you walking down the opening path of the EP. Sovereign’s vocals have a folky vibe as she lightly brushes against your skin. Her voice is like a gentle breeze softly shifting your hair as you walk down a path in a park or wood. Her performance brings a relaxed feeling to the track as she draws the weight of the world from your chest and lets you appreciate the beauty of the world.

‘Right Here’ brings an electronic feeling to the EP through the rise and fall of the synths. While the opening is packed with electronic tones, the wooden flute calls out against the digital warbles. The first instrumental track on the EP, it brings a completely different feel to the soundscape. The electronic tones reach out with a wavering digital touch, while the flute brings an organic grounding. While grounded, the flute has a rather curious vibe that moves from cautious to soothing. This is a very dynamic track that not only combines the electronic and organic instrumentation, but has you flowing through a range of emotions. You never quite know what you are going to feel next while listening which makes the song really captivating.

There is a dramatic sweep that lifts you up through the opening of ‘We’ll Know Nothing Together’. The piano is a light touch that meets an equally light guitar, while the lower levels create a sweeping lushness that raises the music. The almost theatrical flair of the music is tempered by the folky tones of Sovereign’s vocals. Her voice puts a little smile on your face as she nudges you with a friendly elbow. As you listen to the lyrics, you can feel her take your hand and pull you into a fun day with friends. There is a sense of freedom to the music that is picked up by her vocals. It is impossible to listen to this track and not feel a light energy resting in your chest.

‘Double Flat’ brings the electronic tones back, but adds an almost industrial edge to everything. The deep beat vibrates through the soundscape with an undeniable power that makes the cautious touch of the flute shine brighter. The track is packed with a wonderful balance of contrasts with the flute singing out only to be met with a deep reach of the lower instrumentation. Throughout the track, that intense deep beat makes an appearance with a feeling of anticipation, filling the lower tones of the melody. The track is more subdued than some of the others as it brings the contrasting tones and emotions to your ears.

The EP comes to a close with ‘I Reach’ and its deep droning opening tone. This is met by a lighter thread of keys. As these two layers combine, they create a feeling of awakening and light that chases the darkness from your soul. The introduction of the flute makes you think this might be another instrumental track, but Sovereign’s vocals flutter in on the tail of the flute. Her vocals bring the uncertainty of the lyrics to life, before taking on an avant-garde flow for the chorus. On the chorus, she reaches out and pushes the boundaries, to find an internal understanding. This track is the beautiful culmination of the EP and the journey she has taken.

Genevieve Sovereign uses her debut EP It’s Yours to take listeners on a journey of growth and self-understanding, using instrumental tracks and insightful poetic lyrics. Each track has a very different feel showcasing Sovereign’s musicality. The journey laid out across the tracks is one that we can all relate to and is littered with light emotions.
